John Kasich himself is a soft spoken hardcore right winger. By any standard metric of political science, he is by no means a moderate candidate. He defunded Planned Parenthood as part of a partisan political attack against state funded women's healthcare. This attack was undoubtedly spurred on by his intent to run for President this year. On this issue alone, I think the man is utterly repugnant.
And there's more ridiculous rightwing partisan nonsense where that came from... however, that's not what I'm here to talk about.
I'm here to talk about the approximately 20% of the Republican voters who still retain their rational senses and have decided to back the only remaining "reasonable" conservative in this GOP primary.
That's all that's left of the Republican party's constituent brain trust.
Donald Trump is a nightmare candidate. He has 41% of the Republican primary vote. He's a classless, tasteless, obnoxious, rude, petty, loud mouth. He has not said a single thing which shows any understanding of the issues beyond what appeals to the most rabid of the lunatic fringe of conservative constituency. The white supremacist website Stormfront has a massive discussion thread filled with praises for Trump's racist commentary and policy positions. How any Republican could vote fro this guy, I will never know. Ronald Reagan must be spinning in his grave. I'd say the man was a fascist, but I don't think he knows what that is on even the most basic level.
Ted Cruz has 32% of the vote.
Cruz opposes the following: net neutrality (but claims to be a libertarian), the minimum wage, the EPA, the Department of Energy, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (MAKE AMERICA HOMELESS AGAIN!), the Department of Education, evolution, global warming, apparently science in general, legalization of marijuana (but claims to be a libertarian), immigration reform, gay marriage (and even Civil Unions!!!), and Healthcare Reform.
He's also against all forms of abortion even those for severely deformed fetuses forcing women to give birth to babies that will immediately die or spend the rest of their lives as a complete vegetable.
He blames violent crime on Democrats in general, says the majority of violent Criminals are Democrats (the majority of violent criminals are also Christians but I guess he doesn't count those) and blamed Obama for the shooting death of a police officer by a black man.
While it may be true that many of Cruz's positions are rather similar to Kasich's positions and is a talented lawyer, he's arguably the most extreme and radical right wing candidate in this group. He's a pro-theocratic christian fundamentalist who has shown no respect whatsoever to religious minorities. Donald Trump may be similar here, but the Donald isn't a constitutional attorney; he's not a man who should know better than to push for outright THEOCRATIC control of the US Government. His positions on religious influence in this country are nothing short of Christian fascism designed to crush all non-religious and non-christian dissent. He has shown time and again that he is an intelligent man with an understanding of the constitution but no respect for the religious liberty to ALL Americans guaranteed by the First Amendment.
Cruz is perhaps the most hated Republican among his Republican colleagues in congress. He's burned almost everyone who worked with him and is viewed as an extreme pariah even among such staunch conservatives as Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Orrin Hatch and Lindsey Graham who Cruz has frequently criticized as not being conservative enough. If there is anything that makes Cruz the most severe threat to moderates and liberals in the United States its that he is willing to burn everything down around him in order to pursue his fanatic vision of an ultra right wing America. I can with good conscience call this man a fascist and he is well aware of what his positions entail: a brutal crackdown on religious liberty, LGBT minorities, women, nonreligious persons, minority religion adherents and atheists who just want to be treated with basic human fairness.
I may not agree with any of John Kasich's positions but compared to these two lunatics he's the only reasonable candidate left in the GOP's primary race. This GOP primary is a race between a pro-theocracy lunatic, a loudmouthed obnoxious pig named Donald Trump and only one candidate that I can recognize as a reasonable man. Kasich may be a soft spoken hardliner but at the very least he is capable of having good manners and the good judgement to not commit to being a wildly partisan lunatic from the very beginning.
That 20% of voters who support Kasich are the last remaining gasp of reasonable Republicans. The last portion of the Republican party that is capable of understanding nuance, moderation and compromise. How has it come to this Republicans? I personally blame Karl Rove and his role in pushing an out-of-control culture of extreme rhetoric to grab votes and to avoid important public discussions about the nature and direction of the Republican party. Out of control rhetoric produces out of control candidates.
That's just my opinion though.
