The GOP has done its best to benefit politically from bigotry for just too damned long. They've failed time and again to stand up and do what is clearly either morally or ethically correct for themselves or others.
They have routinely employed professional PR arsonists to ride waves of fear and hatred to electoral victory. They smirked and played along when the first black president was harangued by obviously racist conspiracies circulated by their own supporters because they thought that course of action would benefit them. Their campaign practices have become monstrosities of anti-intellectualism and hatred.
Note to Republican leaders: In the military, when your own men are behaving dishonorably, you step up and correct them. You do not reward it or fan the flames of bad conduct. Not only should your own people respect you but you should always be able to demonstrate to your critics that you are demonstrating STRENGTH through integrity, honor and courage.
Your hired PR has made the national dialogue more divisive and chosen cynicism and exploitation over honor and integrity at every turn. And you paid them for this; you paid them to dishonor you. What does it benefit you to win a battle and lose the war?
They've made one bad trade after another when it came to respecting the decency of their fellow Americans and you rewarded the least honorable with their highest positions of respect.
You allowed professional cretins like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin to speak for you. They generated hate where they should have generated reason and awareness. They encouraged chaos where they should have encouraged gallantry and American esprit decor.
It would be one thing if they did any of this with at least some legitimate air of compassion for their opposition while soberly explaining the rationale behind your decisions but instead you let them off the leash to throw dung into everyone's eyes and rut like dogs in orgies of incivility. You mistook your pride for the knowledge they were doing what was right and setting the example you needed to speak from a position of moral authority.
I am far past the point where I could ever trust the GOP with matters of basic common decency. Would I ever vote for the GOP after the last 30 years of insult to the human dignity of those who need to be reminded of their worth to society the most?
These are the people you have let craft your public face for you.
Arthur J. Finklestein (SBVT: It's not hindsight when you knew it was wrong from the beginning. Did you think it was clever?)
Frank Luntz (he taught you how to talk but you learned all the wrong lessons)
and finally the one greaseball just awful enough to make you all collectively choke to political death on the pit of ruined faith that has become the GOP: Donald Trump.
Good riddance. 2016 is set to be a wave of crushing losses and I do not think you will learn from it.
